Introducing the Hurricane Engine

This new twin-turbo 3-liter inline six-cylinder engine, available for the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer since 2023, will also be featured under the hood of the 2025 RAM 1500.

This engine replaces the popular 5.7-liter HEMI V8, but do not worry! The two available versions of the new powerplant will deliver even more power than the outgoing engine!

Technical Details of the Hurricane Engine

The Hurricane engine features a robust structure allowing for two distinct versions: a standard variant and a high-performance one. The base of the engine is crafted from a cast aluminum block. This is the most robust RAM engine ever built. During manufacturing, the block is honed for optimized cylinder bore shaping, aiming for enhanced energy efficiency.

Integrated Technologies : Engine

What allows this new twin-turbo engine to deliver that power level while being that energy efficient? It benefits from several advanced technologies, such as:

  • Two low-inertia, high-flow turbochargers
  • Quick response to throttle inputs
  • Plasma transferred wire arc (spray bore) coating
  • High-pressure direct fuel injection (5,075 psi/350 bar)
  • A dedicated cooling circuit for the air-to-water intercooler mounted on the engine

Difference Between SO and HO versions

As previously mentioned, the new Hurricane engine is available in two versions. The base version, known as the “Standard Output” one (“SO”), delivers 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque. The “High Output » variant (“HO”) of the Hurricane engine produces nothing less than 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of maximum torque! In both cases, the towing capacity reaches 11,850 pounds and the payload 2,300 pounds.

Hurricane vs HEMI V8

Of course, we wouldn't deprive Jeep 4x4 enthusiasts or RAM truck fans of a high-performance engine, as they are accustomed to it! As discussed, the new engine will deliver even more performance, making it hard to oppose such a change!

Here is a comparative table of the two versions of the Jeep Hurricane engine and the V8 it replaces:

Engine Horsepower Torque Fuel Consumption (L/100 km)
Standard-Output Hurricane (SO) 420 horsepower 469 lb-ft 10.4 – 14.4
High-Output Hurricane (HO) 540 horsepower 521 lb-ft 12.5 – 17.0
5.7-liter HEMI V8 395 horsepower 410 lb-ft 11.7 – 15.6

Advantages of the turbocharged Inline Six Configuration

An inline six has a single cylinder head instead of two, making it built from fewer parts, thus easier and less expensive to manufacture than a V engine. This also makes it easier to add further performance parts such as a turbocharger or even electrification. Fewer parts also increase the engine's reliability.

This type of engine also delivers smoother operation than a V engine, additionally generating more torque at very low rpm. Then, adding a turbocharger further enhances its capabilities, allowing it to be more fuel-efficient and emit fewer particles.

Which Jeep and RAM Models are Equipped with the Hurricane Engine?

As mentioned above, the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have been equipped with the new Hurricane engine since the 2023 model year. As for RAM, the brand-new 2025 RAM 1500 will be the first RAM vehicle equipped with this powerplant.
